Labour Party leader and former presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has condemned the ongoing political crisis in Rivers State, calling it a clear violation of Nigeria’s Constitution and democratic principles.
Obi, while writing on his X handle on Monday, criticized the federal government’s decision to release statutory allocations to a Sole Administrator, despite a Supreme Court ruling barring such action.
He warned that this move undermines the rule of law and sets a dangerous precedent for governance in the country.
“The Supreme Court had explicitly ordered that funds should not be released until a properly constituted House of Assembly passes a valid Appropriation Act. Yet, this ruling is being ignored. This is a direct challenge to the authority of our highest court,” Obi stated.

He further accused the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) and the Accountant-General of the Federation (AGF) of complicity in the breach of judicial authority, emphasizing that institutions meant to uphold the law must not engage in unconstitutional actions.
“This is bigger than Rivers State. It is about preserving our democracy. A country where judicial orders are disregarded is on a dangerous path,” he warned.
Obi called on the federal government and all relevant authorities to immediately respect the Supreme Court’s decision, stressing that adherence to the rule of law is essential for Nigeria’s stability and democratic growth.
The crisis in Rivers State has sparked nationwide concerns, with political analysts cautioning that continued defiance of court rulings could lead to broader governance challenges.
