Police confirm death of Unical lecturer in apartment
Cross River State Police Command has confirmed the death of Prof. Felix Akpan of the Political Science department of the University of Calabar (UNICAL).
Prof. Akpan, a former dean of Students Affairs was found dead with multiple stabs at his 181 Duke Town close residence, behind Mega Hilton Hotel, Calabar.
Spokesperson for the state Police Command, Superintendent of Police (SP), Irene Ugbo, disclosed that a suspect, who claimed to be a friend of the victim has been arrested and investigation is ongoing.
She said: “We have a suspect in custody, who claims to be a friend to the victim (professor Akpan), he said he doesn’t know what happened to him or who stabbed him to death.
“Our crack team of detectives have already swung into action, we will soon get to the root of the matter by unraveling who the killer is.”
The Guardian also gathered that the late Professor had escaped assassination several times before he suffered a stroke. During one of the attempts on his life in a drinking joint at Marian in Calabar, a security man was shot dead.
However, the University said there was no official information yet from the family but information reaching them was that he was stabbed to death in his apartment.
The Public Relations Officer of UNICAL, Mr. Eyo Eyo said the deceased was away from academic activities for about four years due to ill health.
Eyo said: “We are on break and again, we have been busy with the elections. Officially, I don’t know if anybody from his family has informed the University but unofficially, we have heard about his demise.
“He had been sick. It is true that during Epoke’s administration, there was an attempt on his life, he escaped it and not too long ago, he had that stroke.
So, I wouldn’t know why somebody would go to kill somebody in his house in that condition.”
