Prioritise use of cement technology for road construction, Ohanaeze tells presidency, N’Assembly

Road-construction

The Chidi Ibeh led faction of Ohanaeze Ndigbo, yesterday, beckoned on the Presidency and the National Assembly to prioritise the use of cement technology in the construction of federal highways in 2024.

In a statement, in Abakaliki, the factional Secretary General of group, Okechukwu Isiguzoro, said that it has come to their attention that some contractors are not complying with the Federal Government’s directives to construct federal highways with concrete and cement technology, describing such actions as sabotage.

He stated that this technology, not only serves as a cost-effective approach, but also significantly reduces the need for foreign exchange, prevents frequent upward reviews of road projects, and ensures long-lasting infrastructure, adding that in contrast, asphalt roads have a lifespan of only 10 years, and the prices of asphalt are experiencing a geometric progression.

The statement reads: “Ohanaeze commends President Bola Tinubu and the Ministry of Works for approving funds and overseeing the ongoing repairs of federal highways across the country. As a result of these initiatives, the confidence of Nigerians has been restored.

Isiguzoro said: “For the first time in many years, we are witnessing the construction of high-quality and durable roads, utilising concrete and cement technology, which have a lifespan of up to 50 years.

“Ohanaeze strongly urges the Presidency, through the Ministry of Works, and the National Assembly to cooperate in enforcing the laws and regulations that support the use of concrete and cement technology in the construction of federal highways in 2024. This will not only boost the economy but also create employment opportunities for the youth in line with local content regulations.

“Given that time is of the essence, it is imperative that the construction of all federal highways strictly adheres to the use of concrete. Alternatively, the National Assembly should consider enacting or amending existing laws to empower the Federal Government to revoke non-compliant contracts and engage competent local contractors for the execution of all projects.”

Isiguzoro noted that the Minister of Works, Dave Umahi, has demonstrated both the expertise and political will necessary to replicate the success achieved in Ebonyi State on a larger scale.
