Pro-Fubara lawmakers take action against NNPCL over oil spill incident
A section of the Rivers State House of Assembly, led by Victor Oko-Jumbo, has passed a resolution mandating its committee on Public Complaint to investigate the cause of the damage from an oil spill at the Nigeria National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) facility in Bonny Local Council.
The committee was tasked with visiting the affected communities, assessing the level of damage, and providing recommendations to alleviate the suffering of the people.
The resolution follows a petition presented by Leader Sokari Goodbye Sokari on behalf of the Minima Community, in Bonny Local Council. The petition, signed by Amaopusenibo Kingsley Hart, urged the House to take immediate action to address the environmental disaster caused by the spill.
The NNPCL oil spill incident, which occurred on November 22, 2024, has affected several communities in Bonny Local Council, including Iloma, Epelema, Orupiri, Ayaminima, Minima, Oloma, and Oguede.
The incident has caused widespread environmental damage and has had a devastating impact on the livelihoods of the affected communities. In a related development, the House also gave the first reading to the Rivers State Real Estate Regulatory Authority Bill 2024 and the Rivers State College of Nursing Sciences Bill 2024.
