Rivers Grassroot Movement calls for unity, democracy, accountable leadership

The Rivers Grassroot Movement has renewed its call for unity among political stakeholders in Rivers State, stressing that only collective action can secure peace, good governance, and long-term progress.

Speaking at an extraordinary stakeholders’ meeting in Port Harcourt, the group’s leader, High Chief Sobomabo Jackrich, said the organisation was established to bridge divisions deepened by partisan politics and to ensure Rivers people speak with one voice on matters affecting their future.

He urged leaders to place the state’s interests above individual or party ambitions, particularly as the 2027 general elections draw closer. “Elections should not be reduced to contests of numbers or narrow loyalties,” he said. “They are defining choices that shape the direction of our state.”

The group also appealed to President Bola Tinubu to reinstate the Rivers State Governor and House of Assembly once the current state of emergency expires, insisting that democratic governance must be restored in full.

Jackrich commended Governor Siminalayi Fubara for his restraint and commitment to peace during the political crisis and praised Federal Capital Territory Minister Nyesom Wike for his role in easing tensions. He said their actions showed that reconciliation was possible when leaders prioritise the welfare of Rivers people.

While expressing support for Fubara’s leadership, the movement stressed the need for closer collaboration between the executive and legislature, warning that prolonged divisions would only hinder development. “Governance is a partnership,” Jackrich said. “The people have endured enough distractions. What is needed now is harmony at the highest levels.”

He added that the movement would continue to advocate for accountability in public office, engage with institutions on policy reforms, and defend the interests of Rivers communities.

The event also honoured High Chief Dumo Lulu-Briggs, who was presented with an Award of Trusteeship in recognition of his contributions to peace, leadership, and community development across the state.
