Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, yesterday, advised stakeholders in the building sector to ensure strict compliance with all rules and regulations on construction in the state.

He gave the charge during the foundation-laying of the 15-storey headquarters of the Institute of Directors (IoD) Nigeria in lkoyi, Lagos.

The governor, who was represented by Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Bimbola Salu-Hundeyin, said compliance with relevant laws on building construction would go a long way in curbing building collapse in Lagos.

He said compliance with guidelines is also important to prevent loss of lives, property and environmental hazards, financial loss and economic retrogression.

Sanwo-Olu, who commended the institute for its compliance with relevant building guidelines, emphasised that all stakeholders must avoid undermining existing regulations. He added that the state government was proud to be associated with the vision and aspiration of loD Nigeria as it celebrates 40 years of establishment.

The project, he said, would promote the culture of good corporate governance practice among Nigerian firms and the public sector through its various activities engineered towards achieving sustainable growth of the Nigerian economy.

Besides, Sanwo-Olu said the government would complement the institute’s effort through massive investment in infrastructure and enjoined it to continue on the path of obedience to regulations at every stage of construction until the completion of the project.

He said no resident of the state would be left behind in policy design and programme of the government.

President and Chairman of Governing Council, IoDs Nigeria, Dr. Ije Jidenma, said the project would create a lasting legacy for the Institute.

Jidenma, who thanked the state government for its support in the last two years, especially in guiding the Institute to meet all the statutory requirements for the project after a lot of challenges, said project would set a new standard in corporate building architecture, saying that project is one of the events to celebrate IoD at 40.

Also, Chairman of Temple Court Development Ltd, Ernest Ebi, said the foundation-laying ceremony marked an historical milestone made possible by the commitment of members.

He said the project, when completed, would be an addition to architectural landscape of Lagos.
