Barely 24 hours after President Bola Tinubu requested confirmation, the Senate only confirmed seven out of the 10 Resident Electoral Commissioners (RECs) for the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

The confirmation was sequel to the adoption of a motion by the Senate Leader, Opeyemi Bamidele (APC: Ekiti) at the Committee of the Whole, yesterday.

Presenting the motion, Bamidele urged the Senate to consider the President’s request.

The Red Chamber had suspended its procedures to admit the nominees and other guests.

Senior Special Assistant to the President on National Assembly Matters (Senate), Abdullahi Gumel, led the nominees into the chamber.

Thereafter, the nominees individually took turns to give highlights of their careers and professional experiences, before their eventual confirmation.

Those screened and confirmed are Etekarnba Umoren (Akwa Ibom); Isah Shaka Ehimeakne (Edo); Oluwatoyin Babalola (Ekiti); Abubakar Ahmed Ma’aji (Gombe); Shehu Wahab (Kwara); Aminu Kasimi Idris (Nasarawa) and Mohammed Abubakar Sadiq (Niger).

The rest three nominees from Rivers, Zamfara and Lagos states, Anugbum Onuoha, Abubakar Fawa Dambo and Bunmi Omoseyindemi, did not present themselves for screening.

President Tinubu had, on Tuesday, sought approval of the upper legislative for confirmation of the 10 nominees.

His request was contained in a letter addressed to the President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio, and read during plenary.

In a related development, the upper legislative chamber also confirmed the appointment of Shaakaa Chira as Auditor-General for the Federation.
