Senate ready to end Plateau killings, says Akpabio

Senate President Godswill Akpabio has assured the people and government of Plateau State of the Senate’s readiness to bring an end to the killings in the state.

Akpabio said the Senate under his leadership would collaborate with other relevant government and security agencies to accomplish the task.

He spoke on Friday at the Church of Christ in Nations (COCIN) Headquarters in Jos during the funeral service of Prof. Janet Plang, the wife of the senator representing Plateau Central in the National Assembly, Senator Diket Plang.

Akpabio used the occasion to reiterate the Senate’s commitment to work with relevant agencies to end the violence in the state.

While responding to the plea of the State Governor, Barr. Caleb Mutfwang, for an urgent response from the Federal Government to the continued killing of innocent indigenes by terrorists, Akpabio said: “As the President of the 10th Senate, I hear you loud and clear, and be rest assured that your travails will be given the needed attention and response from the relevant agencies. And the Egyptians you see today, you shall see them no more.

“Let me, on behalf of my distinguished colleagues, condole with your government and the people of Plateau State on this needless and unwarranted loss of lives. I assure you that your message will be delivered to President Bola Tinubu, and something will be done very urgently to protect the lives and property of the people living in this state.”

He also donated the sum of ₦50 million to the church.

In his condolence message, the Senate President described the late Professor Plang as a “quintessential woman and mother, who loved humanity and did all within her powers to inculcate same in the lives of our children.

“On behalf of the 10th Senate, I pray for the repose of her soul, and may God grant the father, husband, children, and all who knew her the fortitude to bear this irreplaceable loss, in Jesus’ name.”

In the same vein, the President of the Senators’ Wives Association of Nigeria (SEWAN), Dr. (Mrs.) Unoma Godswill Akpabio, noted that the late professor, who headed the association’s Committee on Education, was a committed and dedicated member who carried out her assignments with strength and vigour.

“Our departed sister will be greatly missed. We will miss her candour and commitment to the progress of the association. She was an integral part of us. It was her committee that made it possible for us to intervene in the education of 15 indigent students of the University of Abuja. We pray for the family and loved ones left behind. May her gentle soul rest in perfect peace,” she said.

Senator Diket Plang, in his remarks at the occasion, thanked the COCIN church leadership, the Plateau State Government, GOSA family, traditional rulers, and the 10th National Assembly for their support, prayers, and kindness during the illness and eventual passing of his beloved wife, Prof. (Mrs.) Plang.

From there, the deceased was moved from the church to Takkas Village in Pankshin Local Government Area for burial.
