Senator Banigo salutes Nigerian girls on International Day of the Girl Child

Senator Dr. (Mrs.) Ipalibo Harry Banigo, representing Rivers West Senatorial District, has celebrated Nigerian girls for their strength, resilience, and leadership as the world marks the International Day of the Girl Child. This year’s theme, “The Girl I Am, The Change I Lead: Girls on the Frontlines of Crises,” underscores the growing role of young women in shaping a more inclusive and equitable society.

In a statement issued on Saturday, Senator Banigo—who also chairs the Senate Committee on Health and serves as Deputy Chairman of the Senate Committee on Women Affairs—praised Nigerian girls, particularly those from Rivers West, for their courage, creativity, and commitment to excellence. She said their contributions across education, technology, sports, and entrepreneurship highlight the immense potential of Nigeria’s young women to drive national development.

The senator reaffirmed her dedication to advancing policies that promote gender equality and women’s empowerment, noting that investing in girls is fundamental to achieving a just and prosperous society. “Every girl deserves the opportunity to reach her full potential. As leaders, parents, and citizens, we must continue to build safe spaces and create opportunities that allow them to thrive,” she said.

Senator Banigo further urged government institutions, civil society, and the private sector to intensify efforts in safeguarding the rights of the girl child, while supporting programmes that enhance access to education, mentorship, and leadership opportunities. She described the International Day of the Girl Child as both a celebration and a call to action—a reminder of the collective responsibility to nurture the next generation of women leaders.
