The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), Ondo State chapter, yesterday, took to the streets to protest against the worsening insecurity in the state.

The students, primarily from Owo Polytechnic, blocked Oba Adesida Road near the “A” Division in Akure, chanting “Enough is enough” and demanding urgent government intervention.

They decried the frequent abduction of their colleagues and a surge in abduction and crime in the state, alleging that kidnappers often killed victims even after collecting ransom.

The students, holding placards with various inscriptions and chanting solidarity songs, led by the South-West Chairman of NANS, Oluwarotimi Joshua, disrupted road traffic for several hours and accused the governor, Lucky Aiyedatiwa, of failing to prioritise their safety.

They demanded urgent government intervention to tackle the insecurity concerns. The students also decried the government’s handling of students’ welfare, citing poor conditions in tertiary institutions.

Meanwhile, it was gathered that the state’s Commissioner of Police (CP), Wilfred Afolabi, attempted to disperse the protesters, but they resisted.
RELATEDLY, a group, The Take It Back Movement, Ondo State chapter, has expressed solidarity with the NANS Ondo Joint Campus Council (JCC) in their protest against the “fake promises” of the state governor.

In a statement jointly signed by the State Coordinator, Owolabi Patrick, and the State Public Relations Officer, Ogefa Ayomide, the group reaffirmed its commitment to supporting the students’ cause and ensuring that the governor fulfils his promises to the students.

The group emphasised the importance of unity in the fight for students’ rights, assuring the protesters that they were not alone. The group, however, called on other stakeholders to rally behind NANS Ondo JCC to amplify their demands.
