Following the bail granted Sen. Bassey Akpan (Akwa Ibom North-East) by a court sitting in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, thousands of his supporters have gone into wide jubilation.
Akpan, who is also Akwa Ibom State governorship candidate of Young Progressives Party (YPP) in the 2023 polls, arrived Uyo on Thursday after his release.
Jubilating with the senator’s wife, YPP faithful and his teeming supporters expressed gratitude to God for their candidate’s release.
Despite his ordeal in the hands of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Akpan’s supporters still believe in his leadership ability and as such supported his cause, even in his absence. They had reportedly vowed to vote for him, even if he is in detention, during next year’s ballot.
Prosecuted by EFCC, the senator was jailed 42 years, without an option of fine, for corruption. Akpan’s running mate, a retired Assistant Inspector General of Police (AIG), Anwana Amba, described his principal’s ordeal as a test of his faith.
He announced that Akpan took his milk of kindness to the Ikot Ekpene Correctional Centre, where he donated medical supplies to ease the medical concerns of inmates and facilitated release of several inmates, who could not afford their bail.
