The Representative of Taiwan in Nigeria, Mr. Andy Yih-Ping Liu, has commended the United States Government’s support for Taiwan’s participation in the World Health Assembly.

‘’The US Ambassador to Nigeria, Amb. Mary Beth Leonard rightfully indicated in her remarkable letter ‘Taiwan’s exclusion from WHA undermines global health’, dated May 26, 2021, that Taiwan’s participation in the World Health Assembly was in line with the Motto ‘Health for all’ of World Health Organisation (WHO).

‘’The US Ambassador also said Taiwan’s participation would provide the opportunity that the global community would benefit from Taiwan’s successful public health and medical model of protecting citizens from the COVID-19 pandemic,’’ he said.

Liu said the Taiwanese people were pleased with Amb. Leonard’s widely published letter by the Nigerian media, adding that they were appreciative of the US support.

He added that the G7 Foreign and Development Ministers from Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the United Kingdom and the United States had unanimously supported Taiwan in their Summit Statement held on May 5, 2021.

Liu quoted paragraph 18 of the statement as saying “We support Taiwan’s meaningful participation in World Health Organisation forums and the World Health Assembly.”

He said : ‘’Amb. Leonard’s letter and the G7 Summit Statement, together with the more than 1,700 parliamentarians from 80 countries, have all indicated that Taiwan can really provide what the world health system needs in this challenging time.

‘’Therefore, the ‘Taiwan Model’ of successfully developing our economy and our democracy, together with the valuable experience fighting against the horrible COVID-19 invasion can steadfastly help any country that would like to cooperate with Taiwan in sharing the best ways of promoting humanitarian welfare for all walk of lives.

‘’Just like during our assistance to São Tomé and Príncipe in the elimination of malaria and development cooperation projects in the Kingdom of Eswatini have demonstrated, we the Taiwanese people and government are always ready to help, and we’re helping all the time.”

Liu reiterated his home government’s commitment to always remain, a true and unselfish partner for their African friends, especially Nigerians.

‘’We the people of Taiwan have worked so hard in the last several decades to develop ourselves and have become a true living example of Success Story and the Force of Good through economic growth, democratisation, public health for all citizens, respect of human rights, and
rule-base governance.

‘’We have come a long way, and our trail-blazing model of development and valuable experience of fighting off the COVID-19 virus especially, has become a world phenomenon, not just being appreciated by the global society, but also being praised as ‘Taiwan Can Help’ in this challenging time of COVID-19 pandemic.

‘’We believe wholeheartedly, exactly like US Amb. Leonard clearly depicted, that our valuable experience and technical know-how will benefit whoever like to reach out, and we’ll definitely help each other in this challenging time of COVID-19 pandemic,’’ he said.
