President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved the conversion of Yaba College of Technology in Lagos into a university.

This was revealed by the Minister of Education, Tunji Alausa, on Friday.

The Guardian learned that students and staff of the institution had been anticipating this conversion.

Alausa disclosed that Tinubu did not hesitate to approve the conversion when he discussed it with him.

“But I must let you know that when I discussed the issue with President Bola Tinubu, he did not waste time in approving it. I am just waiting for the memo and other necessary protocols from the appropriate quarters.”

The minister, who inspected some projects at the institution, noted that YABATECH is fit to become a university.

In his remarks, the Rector of YABATECH, Dr. Ibrahim Abdul, said the institution aspires to be a university of technical and vocational education.

“While we are praying to become a university, we don’t want to be just one of those universities. We want to be a university of technical and vocational education that brings innovation, solves societal problems and challenges, and contributes greatly to the advancement of our dear country.

“We have the manpower; we just need the support of the government in this regard,” said the rector.
