President Bola Tinubu has directed the release of funds for the payment of pension arrears, salary increases, and other entitlements owed to retired military personnel.

The decision follows two days of peaceful protests by military veterans at the Federal Ministry of Finance.

Minister of State for Defence, Dr. Bello Muhammed Matawalle, announced the directive on Friday, expressing gratitude to the President for his prompt action.

Matawalle praised Tinubu for facilitating the immediate payment of the three-month salary increase and the release of funds to settle pension arrears and other entitlements.

In a statement by the Director of Press and Public Relations at the Ministry of Defence, Mr Henshaw Ogubike, the minister confirmed that military personnel have already started receiving payment alerts for the salary increases.

The Minister commended President Tinubu’s unwavering commitment to the welfare of active and retired military personnel, reaffirming the administration’s focus on resolving outstanding pension arrears to improve the living standards of those who have served the nation.

He also acknowledged the role of the Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Mr. Wale Edun, for ensuring the successful disbursement of funds.

Matawalle urged the Nigerian military to remain steadfast in their duties, assuring them of the President’s determination to boost morale and provide the necessary support to address insecurity across the country.

“Despite initial setbacks, be assured that Mr. President is committed to uplifting our military forces as they confront the challenges of insecurity,” he stated.

Noting the critical role of the military in combating insurgency, terrorism, and other forms of criminality, Matawalle reaffirmed the government’s dedication to eradicating insecurity.

He assured the Armed Forces of President Tinubu’s steadfast support and commitment to enhancing their readiness and resilience in securing the nation.
