President Bola Tinubu has warned that islands and buildings close to main roads and waterways should not be given approvals.
The president made this warning on Thursday while opening the new Lekki deep seaport access road, a project he started when he was Lagos State governor.
Tinubu frowned at what he called “illegal island creation” and uncontrolled land reclamation.
The president ordered that any unauthorised structural developments, especially those near the road. Tinubu also made a case for future road expansion.
“I have directed the Minister of Works, the Surveyor-General of the federation, and all state governors—this legacy project must be protected,” Tinubu said.
“Let us procure a stable setback for future expansion and infrastructure building to enhance our road architecture.”
Tinubu praised access roads as important infrastructure that would make shipping more efficient, cut costs for port users, and boost economic growth.
The president criticised what he called “illegal island creation” and uncontrolled land reclamation. He said these activities damage long-term planning for roads and other vital infrastructure.
Tinubu said, “I have directed the Minister of Works, the Surveyor-General of the federation, and all state governors—this legacy project must be protected.
“Let us procure a stable setback for future expansion and infrastructure building to enhance our road architecture.”
The president warned that planning permissions already granted for buildings in protected areas would be cancelled, with Lagos facing particular scrutiny.
