Troops neutralise bandit, recover weapons in Taraba

Troops of the 6 Brigade Nigerian Army/Sector 3 Operation Whirl Stroke (OPWS) have neutralized a bandit and recovered arms and ammunition during a series of operations in Taraba State.

The announcement was made on Tuesday via a statement made available to media practitioners in Jalingo, by the Brigade spokesperson, Captain Oni Olubodunde.

The operations, which he said took place in Kwanchi village and surrounding areas within Karim-Lamido Local Government Area, were part of intensified military efforts following recent violence that led to significant loss of lives and property.

“On May 26, during a fighting patrol in Kwanchi village, troops encountered armed bandits and engaged them in a hot pursuit,” the statement said.

During the operation, one of the troops’ motorcycles broke down and was secured in the village to allow the mission to continue.

Upon returning, the troops discovered the motorcycle had been stolen, prompting an immediate raid to retrieve it.

The search, according to him, led to the discovery of three policemen and a civilian, identified as Alhaji Munga, at the scene.

Further interrogation led to a phone call to a man named Alhaji Lamido, who claimed the motorcycle had been taken to Kudeh village near a riverbank.

Troops mobilized to the location, where they came under sudden gunfire from bandits.

The soldiers responded swiftly, engaging the attackers in a fierce gun battle. The bandits fled the scene, abandoning their position.

Items recovered from the operation include one dane gun, one locally fabricated pistol, and four motorcycles.

Commander of the 6 Brigade, Brigadier General Kingsley Chidiebere Uwa, commended the troops for their discipline and quick response.

“This operation demonstrates our resolve to take the fight to criminal elements wherever they are hiding,” he stated.

He urged the people of Taraba State to continue supporting military efforts by providing credible information to aid ongoing operations under Operation Lafiyan Jamaa.

“The safety and security of citizens in Taraba State remain our top priority,” Brigadier General Uwa emphasized. “We remain committed to eradicating all forms of criminality and restoring peace across the state.”
