Ugwuanyi declares emergency on WASH
Enugu State Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi yesterday declared a state of emergency on the Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) sector in the state.
This followed the inauguration of the Inter-ministerial Committee on the Implementation of WASH Action Plan in the state.
Represented by Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Prof. Simon Ortuanya, the governor said the declaration became necessary following the importance of hygiene to humanity.
Ugwuanyi said the sector had not received the needed attention in the country, throwing up several challenges to citizens.
He quoted statistics showing that about 55 million Nigerians had no access to clean water while about 110 million had no descent toilet and handwashing facilities.
