UN holds summit on sustainable development Sept. 25-27
THE United Nations (UN) Information Centre (UNIC), Lagos, in conjunction with the UN Department of Public Information has planned to hold a summit on sustainable development between September 25 and 27, 2015 in New York.
The Assistant Secretary General for Policy and Co-ordination, United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs (DESA), Mr. Thomas Gass, who disclosed this at a media briefing, which attracted journalists from various parts of the world, said the summit would focus on Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
Gass said the forum is to make the world aware of what Vision 3030 is all about, adding that the SDGs are committed to eradicating poverty at all levels.
The summit, which would have in attendance various heads of government of the member-states, journalists, accredited groups, non-governmental organistations, among others, is being held once in every 15 years.
Also speaking at the briefing, National Information Officer, UNIC, Lagos, Mr. Oluseyi Soremekun, said his organisation has the sole responsibility of passing across activities, policies and processes of the UN to the grassroots, adding that over 100 heads of governments of member-states would be involved in the summit.
Soremekun said that the SDGs, which would also be adopted at the summit, are initiatives of the UN, as development across the world is tied to SDGs.
