Use Presidential power to restructure Nigeria, create state police, Afenifere tells Tinubu

SBM Intelligence warns of growing threat from insurgents, separatists
Afenifere has urged President Bola Tinubu to, as a matter of importance, forward a bill for the immediate restructuring of the country and creation of state police to the National Assembly.

This was as Nigeria’s leading geopolitical research consultancy, SBM Intelligence, released fresh data, highlighting the leading role of Boko Haram in the series of bombings and attacks in Nigeria in the past three years.

During an expanded executive committee meeting at the Akure country home of the national leader, Pa Reuben Fasoranti, the pan-Yoruba socio-political organisation emphasised that the move became imperative following the spate of insecurity in the country.

In a communiqué issued through its National Publicity Secretary, Jare Ajayi, the group urged Tinubu to use his authority as President of the country to ensure the actualisation of the process, as well as the restructuring of the country.

While stressing the need for the procurement of modern technology equipment to combat insecurity in the country, the frontline Yoruba group expressed worry about unabated attacks by bandits.

The communiqué reads: “Of particular concern is the situation of insecurity in Yorubaland and in parts of Nigeria. Note was taken of the seeming genocide, particularly in Benue and Plateau states, and in the North and certain parts of the South-East of the country.

“Afenifere also considered some of the socio-economic situations prevailing in the country. After a comprehensive deliberation, the meeting resolved as follows: ‘Afenifere takes note of various efforts of the governments to combat the increasing security situation in the country. The organisation feels that, much as the security agencies are trying their best, a lot still needs to be done to achieve the desired objectives on security.”

In light of the above, Afenifere recommended the following steps: state police to be established without further delay. In this respect, it called on Tinubu to forward an executive bill to the National Assembly to amend the Constitution to allow the establishment of state police in line with his pronouncement that state police is now a necessity.

Meanwhile, in a post shared on its verified X handle yesterday, the African-focused security and intelligence firm listed Boko Haram, Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP), bandits, Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), unknown gunmen and armed Fulani herders as the main actors behind the insurgency.

The data stated that Nigeria’s bombing landscape witnessed a massive transformation from 2010 to 2025, following Boko Haram’s high-fatality urban attacks, which reached their peak between 2014 and 2015.

According to the data, the attacks became concentrated in Borno State, North-East Nigeria, until the insurgency broke into factions like ISWAP, which focused mainly on the use of Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs).

The infographics revealed that attacks on life and property by the terrorist group rose from 105 in 2022 to 147 in 2023. The report revealed that the country witnessed a spike in the number of attacks executed by Boko Haram from 147 to 191 in 2024.
