WAEC transforms, begins CBT exams with private candidates

The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has announced its readiness to conduct the West African Senior School Certificate Examinations (WASSCE) electronically. The body said the computer-based examination would start with private candidates.

The Head of Nigeria Office, Mr Amos Dangut, disclosed this in a statement by the spokesperson of the organisation, Mrs. Moyosola Adesina. Adesina said registration for the examination would commence on December 18.

The statement read in part: “In line with global best practices, the Nigeria National Office of WAEC wished to inform the general public and stakeholders that it has concluded plans to migrate its WASSCE for private candidates examination diets from paper and pencil test to computer-based examination.

“The innovation will commence with WASSCE for private candidates 2024 – first series, billed to hold in February. While the objective tests will be CBT-based, the essay and test of practical papers would be hybrid, as questions will be displayed on screen and candidates would be required to write answers on the answer booklets provided.

“Furthermore, the examination will be conducted in urban centres/cities and candidates with special needs have been factored into the plan.

“So, in order to enable candidates familiarise themselves with the new examination platform, arrangements have been concluded for a mock examination to be conducted before the examination commences.”

While the council implores all prospective candidates to hone their computer skills and be fully prepared to sit for CBT, it noted that all its examinations would henceforth be conducted electronically.
