Winners emerge in Rotary quiz competition
Lanre Awolokun Senior High School, Gbagada, has emerged winner of the 2022 Rotary yearly inter-secondary schools quiz competition that was held in Lagos State.
Kosofe Senior College, Kosofe came second, while Ogudu Senior Grammar School, Ogudu emerged third in the stiff competition grand finale held at the District 9110 Clcentre at Ikeja, where all the zonal winners competed for the grand prize.
The yearly competition, which is in its sixth edition, was organised by nine Rotary Clubs in Lagos, namely Gbagada-South, Ikorodu Metropolitan, Gbagada, Ewutuntun, Onigbogbo, Owutu Isawo, Ikorodu Golden, Shomolu and Ikate in collaboration with the Lagos Education District 2.
The competition featured 56 schools within the participating club zones from the three local councils, including Somolu, Kosofe and Ikorodu. They were quizzed on mathematics, English Language, Chemistry, Physics, Economics, Current Affairs and Civic Education.
The Project Coordinator, Oluwasanu Afolabi, said the competition, one of Rotary’s seven areas of focus, was basic education and literacy.
According to him, this year’s first place winners got laptops and a golden trophy, the second place got tablets and silver trophy, the third place, which won the 2021 edition, went home with android phones, while all the participating students received exercise books.
The President, Rotary club of Gbagada-South, Lanre Akosile, said this competition is aimed at improving the education standard in the country, especially in Lagos State.
He said the clubs are more passionate about their communities to ensure all children have access to better basic education, noting that government cannot do everything.
He said the world is going digital and there is need to equip the students with technology through equipping schools with electronic library.
The President, Rotary club of Ikorodu Metropolitan, Olushola Williams, said the competition is to foster and encourage brilliancy among students and ensure they read widely to become the best future leaders in the country.
The President, Rotary club of Ikate, Ugochukwu Egesionu, said public schools are in a mess, adding that the competition is the clubs’ way to motivate schools to prepare their students for any form of competition locally and international.
He said the prizes given would boost the morale of the students in preparing for their examinations, especially with the knowledge they acquired from the quiz.
