The Petrochemical engineering graduate from the Federal University of Owerri (FUTO) was born in Lagos. He began singing professionally in 2006, and got signed on paparazzi records, 2008. However, “I had to allow the musical career to lie low because that same year, I got admission into the Federal University of Technology. So, I had to take it slowly with music, which I did underground. We were to graduate 2013, but because of strikes, we ended up graduating in 2014 and here I am in 2015 going full time.”

Gone are those days when music was considered to be for failures. Parents too are beginning to allow their wards express their love for the profession by going full time like it is the case with Godwin Chinedu Nzekwe, popularly known as Bcode.

Asked what he has done since 2006, the Afro-pop singer said, “this is my third official single. The first came with a video, it didn’t get the massive acceptance I expected, but I understand that as a new act in a new field, it is going take a while for people to adapt to your style and all that, but I am releasing another single soon and it will be coming with the video.”

On what would stand him out, Bcode said, “I am not going to say I am the strongest vocalist, but I’m very versatile. I can just switch from one genre to another and I think that is strong point for me.”

Talking on how he gets inspiration, he said, “it comes from the struggles of life basically, life wont be complete without the ups and downs, because, sometimes, these things make you strong and make you learn from your mistakes and it also makes you realise how strong you can be. The good times make you want to write good songs and the bad times make you want cry out your heart.
When I am writing my lyrics, if it’s love song, for instance, I like to get to everyone, the young the old. I want everyone to be a part of it, to relate to it. And when I’m in a good mood, I just want to make everyone dance, be happy and just feel alive because it is a privilege.”

Asked what music meant to him, the engineer described it as, “fun. Life won’t be fun or interesting without music. Sometimes, its not even about what the lyrics are saying, but the rythm of the drums is life, it is something I just can’t stay without.”

Bcode also commented on the Nigerian music industry and his opinion is: “to me, it is the fastest growing industry in the world, and if you look at where we were 10 years ago from every aspect to international collaborations, I think we are doing well. If there is a little bit of security on the distribution part, I can say we are taking over the world. Because right now, we are getting recognition all over the world being in the industry is a blessing, I say maximum respect to those who were there before me because without them, we won’t have had an industry to look up to. This also gives me hope that BCode will become a brand not just in Africa, but the world, making songs that people all over the world could relate with.”

On his inspiration, Bcode has this to say: “I respect 2face a lot, he is an act you just feel so proud of, MI because he is a good rapper. We have even the younger ones like Wizkid and Davido doing well globally. There are just too many to mention, but they all have made the industry great and they really inspire me and make me want to work hard. On the international scene, I like Akon a whole lot, his R&B is great, and of course, Christ Brown, he brings funk into it and it makes it fresh and new.”

Asked why he stepped aside from petro chemical to music, Bcode said,
“Music in me is natural I knew I already had it so, why restrict myself to just music? I though I should divert and do something fresh, expand the knowledge so that I could be a professional in two fields.”

Coming back to music, I tell you it was not easy, my family was like is this what you really want to do after five years at the university? But the truth is, music is in me, even if I decide not to do it anymore and face something else, I still see myself writing songs for people.”
