The Yoruba Youth Council (YYC) has disagreed with former President Olusegun Obasanjo’s demand for the removal of Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) Chairman, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu.
Obasanjo’s criticism of INEC’s handling of the 2023 elections at the Chinua Achebe Leadership Forum sparked the YYC’s response.
The YYC believes Obasanjo’s call is unwarranted, citing Prof. Yakubu’s significant efforts to rectify past anomalies and strengthen Nigeria’s electoral process.
“With all due respect to Baba Obasanjo, we believe his call for dismissal is unnecessary,” stated Comrade Eric Oluwole, YYC President.
“Prof. Yakubu has taken pivotal steps in our democratic journey, and we’re proud of the progress achieved under his leadership.”
The council questioned Obasanjo’s stance, recalling his 2010 acknowledgement of the difficulties in achieving a flawless electoral process.
“Why does Baba Obasanjo now expect perfection?” asked the YYC. “Electoral reforms take time, and Prof. Yakubu’s efforts should be commended, not undermined.
“Key reforms introduced by Prof. Yakubu include measures to reduce electoral violence, such as mandating peace accords among parties and candidates. “Progress under Prof. Yakubu is undeniable,” noted the YYC. “Dismissing him now would derail these efforts.”
In conclusion, the Yoruba Youth Council reaffirmed its solidarity with Prof. Yakubu, passing a vote of confidence in his leadership. “We commend Prof. Yakubu for his dedication to democratic values and urge Nigerians to support his efforts in building a credible electoral system.”
