Youths protest against rape, others in Yobe

Angry youths

Over 6,500 youths under the auspices of World Motivational Speakers (WDMS) have protested against rape, kidnapping and deterioration of education in the North.

According to them, the protest was to task security agencies to overcome lingering security challenges in the affected 19 states.

Leading the protest, yesterday, in Potiskum, Yobe State, WDMS representative, Aliyu Haruna, disclosed: “The rate of rape and kidnapping in the North has continued with the loss of many lives and ransom payments in millions of naira on daily basis.”

He lamented that the future of the victims were endangered with increased levels of trauma and mental disorder.

Citing Yobe, he noted that dozens of women, young and old, were raped in the last six years, and most of the suspects still walk free in communities.

He added that the deteriorating state of education in the North East, North West and North Central parts of the country fuelled insecurity.

“We embarked on this peaceful protest in view of the deteriorating level of education in the North,” he said, noting that there are security gaps and challenges where young, innocent poor girls are being raped and dumped without justice.

“As young people, we feel their plight to make this known to the public through peaceful demonstration,” adding that this could improve the state of security and educational system for the youths in the north.”

Some placards carried by the protesters read: “Stop Killing #Brothers and Sisters in the North”, “End Kidnapping, Rapping” and “Bring Back our Kidnapped Girls.”
