Nigeria Air: CSO submits Freedom of Information request on airline scandal

Connected Development (CODE), a renowned pan-African organization dedicated to empowering marginalized communities, has taken a significant step in its pursuit of transparency and accountability. The organization has submitted a Freedom of Information (FOI) request to the Federal Ministry of Aviation regarding the Nigeria Air scandal.


In an official letter addressed to the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry and signed by Hamzat Lawal, the Chief Executive of CODE, the organization has demanded specific details concerning the utilization of the allocated N85 billion for the establishment of Nigeria Air.

The FOI request from CODE encompasses two primary aspects:

A comprehensive breakdown of how the allocated funds are being utilized, including a detailed account of expenditures and activities undertaken as part of the establishment of Nigeria Air.

Information pertaining to the procurement process involved in securing partnerships for the establishment of Nigeria Air, including the names of partners, the negotiation process employed, and any relevant associated documentation.

According to CODE, this request aligns with Section 2 (4) of the Freedom of Information Act, 2011, which mandates the wide dissemination and ready availability of all information relating to the receipt and expenditure of public or other funds by institutions.

In their letter, CODE emphasized the importance of transparency and accountability, stating, ”We await and will appreciate the receipt of all information requested not later than 7 days of application in accordance with the Freedom of Information Act of 2011.”

This move by CODE highlights their commitment to promoting good governance and ensuring that public funds are utilized in a responsible and accountable manner. The organization’s pursuit of transparency in the Nigeria Air scandal is a testament to their dedication to empowering marginalized communities and holding institutions accountable.

As the FOI request has been submitted, the public eagerly anticipates the Ministry of Aviation’s response and the provision of the requested information within the stipulated timeframe.
