Ajoke Alonge: An outstanding and resilient social advocate

SIR: It is with great admiration and heartfelt respect that I deliver this speech in respect of Mrs. Ajoke Alonge; B.Ed. (Special Education/English), University of Ibadan (1992), MSW (Social Work), University of Ibadan (2002), and a second master’s degree from the Graduate School of Social Work, University of Denver in Colorado State, United States of America (USA) in 2006.

This is upon her winning the prestigious Ford Foundation scholarship. Alonge is an extraordinary social worker whose unwavering commitment and resilience have left an indelible mark on all who have had the privilege to meet and work with her. As a physically challenged woman, she has consistently demonstrated that determination and compassion know no boundaries, inspiring countless individuals and communities through her tireless service and a firm belief in “ability in disability”.

Throughout her career, Alonge has exemplified the core values of social work—integrity, empathy, and advocacy. Her ability to connect with diverse populations, particularly those facing diverse challenges, marginalisation and adversity is unmatched. She approaches every individual with dignity and respect, ensuring that every voice is heard and every need is addressed with sensitivity, compassion and professionalism.

Among her many achievements, Alonge has spearheaded several community initiatives aimed at promoting inclusivity and accessibility for people with disabilities. Her leadership in developing support programmes, organising awareness campaigns, and facilitating workshops has empowered many to overcome barriers and embrace their potentials. Her efforts have contributed significantly to policy reforms and the betterment of social services within our community, state and country.

What truly sets her apart is her personal experience, remarkable resilience and positive outlook. She transforms these challenges into opportunities, never allowing obstacles to diminish her drive to succeed or her capacity to inspire others. Her colleagues and patients, their families alike are motivated by her example of courage, strength, perseverance, and unwavering optimism.

In addition to her professional accomplishments, Alonge is a compassionate mentor, guiding others with wisdom and care. Her collaborative spirit fosters a supportive environment where everyone is encouraged to pursue personal and collective growth. Her never say die spirit is worthy of emulation by our youths. Alonge, from her personal life experience continues to be a shining star that we all can learn from.

She has won several awards in recognition of her positive impacts in the micro and macro levels of Social Work practice namely: Oyo State Merit Award as “the Best Disabled Student in Oyo State in 1996;a Woman of Influence 2007, in the United Kingdom; the Best Pediatric Social Worker 2012, 2020 and 2022 by the Department of Paediatric, College of Medicine University College Hospital, (UCH), Ibadan.

I am confident that she will continue to excel and uplift those around her, no matter the path she chooses. I am proud to be associated with her, confident and assured that she will always bring integrity, passion, and excellence to any endeavour. Thank you for being a worthy ambassador for those living with disabilities.
