The Role of Youths in Party Affairs and Governance

The role of young people in shaping the future of any nation cannot be overemphasized. In Nigeria today, youths constitute the majority of the population and therefore remain a critical force in politics, governance, and societal transformation. Their active participation in party politics and governance is not just desirable, but essential for the survival and growth of democracy.

Youth Participation in Party Politics

Political parties remain the primary gateway to political leadership. Recognizing the importance of young people, most political parties in Nigeria, including the All Progressives Congress (APC), have created opportunities for youth involvement through positions such as National Youth Leader, Zonal Youth Leader, State Youth Leader, Local Government Youth Leader, and Ward Youth Leader. These roles are structured to ensure that the voice of young people is heard at every level of the party hierarchy.

However, it is not enough for such positions to exist; the challenge is for young people to effectively key into them. This requires preparation, discipline, and a clear sense of purpose. It also demands that youths see political participation not just as a means of personal ambition but as an opportunity to serve their communities and the nation at large.

The Importance of Education

Education is the foundation upon which successful political engagement is built. Without education, formal or informal, no youth can fully maximize the opportunities presented by political parties or governance structures. An educated youth is better equipped to articulate ideas, negotiate effectively, and understand the complexities of governance. It is education that gives young people the confidence and competence to lead responsibly.

Learning Through Mentorship

Another critical factor in youth development within politics and governance is mentorship. Most young people who have successfully utilized political opportunities have done so by being humble, patient, and respectful to their leaders. They do not rush into positions of authority but rather learn gradually, gaining valuable experience along the way. By observing and learning from experienced leaders, they acquire the wisdom to navigate political challenges and the discipline to sustain themselves in public life.

Humility, respect for elders, and a willingness to learn remain timeless virtues for youths aspiring to leadership. In my own journey within the APC, these values have been instrumental.

The Tinubu Administration and APC’s Support for Youth

The administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has done fairly well in giving opportunities to young people. We have seen young Nigerians being appointed to key positions in government, entrusted with responsibilities that allow them to contribute meaningfully to national development. Similarly, the APC as a party has been consistent in opening its structures to youths at all levels, from the ward to the national leadership.

This is a demonstration of faith in the abilities of young Nigerians and an acknowledgement of their central role in sustaining the party’s vision for a progressive Nigeria.

Conclusion

For Nigerian youths, the message is clear: the doors of opportunity in politics and governance are open. But to step through them successfully, education is key, mentorship is invaluable, and humility is non-negotiable. With these values, young people can not only participate but excel in party politics and governance, helping to shape a brighter future for Nigeria.
