Almakura commends peaceful conduct of Nasarawa LG election
Immediate past governor Tanko Almakura has commended the peaceful conduct of the state November 2 Local Government Area (LGA) election.
Al-Makura gave commendation immediately after casting his vote at Lungun Wambai Polling Unit of Gayam Electoral Ward of Lafia LGA.
He described the election as one of the fairest in recent times, stating that the electorates conducted themselves well.
Similarly, Aliyu Bello, state Chairman of All Progressives Congress (APC), who voted at the Remi Uku Polling Unit of Gayam ward, said the election was free, fair, and credible.
Bello disclosed that there was no rancour so far and everybody was performing his duty peacefully.
He said that his party would participate in every election because that is the essence of a political party.
The APC Chairman expressed optimism about his party winning the election, given the quality of the candidates presented by the party.
Also, Sagir Ibrahim, Lafia Chairmanship candidate of the Africa Democratic Congress (ADC) said the election was free, fair, and credible and expressed optimism of winning his election.
However, the ongoing council elections in Nasarawa were characterised by voter apathy as most polling units are empty except for the presence of electoral officers who are seen sitting alone.
Most of the polling units visited in the early hours of Saturday’s local government election were empty while others recorded very low turn out.
Movement in and around the state capital was not restricted. as shops, motorcycles, and commercial tricycles were freely moving, unlike in previous elections.
Before the polls, the main opposition People’s Democratic Party, PDP, and the New Nigerian Peoples Party, NNPP announced their withdrawal.
The reasons given include the illegality and the hike in the cost of nomination forms sold by the Nasarawa State Independent Electoral Commission (NASIEC).
Only nine political parties participated in the Nasarawa November 2 local government election.
