Loyalists to Governor Siminalayi Fubara of Rivers State and members of the Simplified Movement, nominated for the local council elections, have been directed to contest under the platform of the All Peoples Party (APP).

The Guardian learned that the decision was taken by the Simplified family, an umbrella body supporting the governor.

The decision follows the crisis rocking the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), the platform through which Fubara was elected. However, his estranged godfather and the Minister of Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, is apparently in full control of the party’s structure in the state and even at the national level.

Wike’s faceoff with Fubara has reached its climax following the FCT Minister’s ability to maintain control of the PDP, while allegedly forming a strong romance and alliance with the Labour Party (LP), the Social Democrat Party (SDP) and the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the state, thereby blocking Fubara and his followers from pitching their tents with these parties.

By adopting APP by Fubara’s men, the party is gaining momentum daily and becoming very formidable in the state due to the governor’s organic support as a result of his style of leadership.

The local council election, which is expected to be held on October 5, 2024, returned some Caretaker Committee Chairmen inaugurated about three months ago by Fubara as candidates, while others were unable to get a return nod from the powers that be.

According to a source in the Government House, some CTC Chairmen’s return was based on performance, capacity, loyalty and zoning. The source said that some outgoing chairmen were loyal but couldn’t perform within the time they had to lead.

Also speaking on the local council polls, the LP spokesman in the state, Gogo Wellington, accused the Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission (RSIEC) of failing to adhere to its promises and assurances about the polls.
