A tense legal battle unfolded at the Lagos State High Court today as 35 members of the Lagos State House of Assembly arrived to defend their decision to remove Mudashiru Obasa as Speaker. The lawmakers are facing a lawsuit filed by Obasa, who claims his January 13, 2025, removal was unlawful.

Photos captured the arrival of the 35 lawmakers, who entered the court in anticipation of the crucial hearing. The legal showdown stems from Obasa’s challenge to his ousting, which he alleges occurred while he was out of the country.

The courtroom was set for a clash of legal titans, with Obasa represented by Chief Afolabi Fashanu (SAN). Speaker Mojisola Meranda, who replaced Obasa, has assembled a formidable legal team led by Mr. Tayo Oyetibo (SAN). Other prominent lawyers representing the lawmakers include Mr. Olu Daramola (SAN), Mr. Femi Falana (SAN), Dr. Muiz Banire (SAN), Mrs. Abimbola Akeredolu (SAN), Dr. Dada Awosika (SAN), Prof. Dayo Amokaye (SAN), Mr. Mofe Oyetibo (SAN), Mr. Olumide Oyewole, and Mr. Wunmi Okeremi.
The legal proceedings come amidst heightened tensions within the Assembly. In a statement released on Friday, the House condemned what it described as an unsanctioned attempt by Obasa and three other members to convene a plenary session on Thursday.

According to the House spokesman, Steve Ogundipe, the purported session was unconstitutional and without legislative effect as it lacked a formal notice, quorum, approved agenda, and the mace. The statement emphasized that only five out of 40 members were present.

The House further reiterated its “unwavering support” for Speaker Mojisola Lasbat Meranda, dismissing rumors of her resignation as “entirely unfounded.” The statement affirmed that she enjoys the confidence and support of 36 colleagues.
The House also highlighted its commitment to working with the All Progressives Congress (APC) leadership to resolve the ongoing dispute, emphasizing its dedication to serving the interests of Lagosians.

The legal proceedings are expected to shed light on the complex power struggle within the Lagos State House of Assembly, with implications for the political landscape of the state.
