Meet Winny Ezeme: Gospel Icon Africa Season 1 Winner

Winny Ezeme

The remarkable journey of Winny Ezeme, a gospel artist hailing from Enugu State, is one that embodies the triumph of the human spirit over unimaginable adversity. As the Nigerian music industry celebrates her rise, Winny unveils the untold story of a young girl who turned years of silent suffering into a ministry of song, offering hope to millions across the nation and beyond.

Born in Enugu in 1995, her story, rooted in resilience and faith, is a beacon of inspiration for every Nigerian facing life’s storms.

At the tender age of seven, Winny’s life took a drastic turn when her father, a hardworking man from Enugu, lost his job and was diagnosed with Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD).

Living as a house help in her aunt’s home, she was isolated from her biological family and forbidden from making friends. “I couldn’t reach my parents or siblings. I was a prisoner in someone’s house,” she stated.

For ten long years, from 2002 to 2012, she endured this ordeal, her only solace found in the melodies she hummed in secret.

In 2012, at 17, Winny summoned the courage to flee.

Music, once her companion in captivity, became her lifeline in freedom. “I started writing songs about my pain, my hope, and my faith,” she explained. Her childhood trauma fueled her passion, inspiring her to pursue music professionally.

Her story has resonated deeply in Nigeria, where resilience is a cultural hallmark. As she releases her new single, “You Reign,” Winny’s unbreakable spirit continues to shine, offering a soundtrack of salvation to a nation that cherishes stories of triumph
