
Peter Eben-Spiff and Fatumata Coker, at the weekend, took the top laurels at the Lakowe Lakes Golf Club’s 10th Championship, which featured some of the best players in the sport.
Coker began the victory dance by shooting 81, 78 for 159, 15 over par in 36 holes to retain the lady’s honour. She was followed closely by Jumai Abdullahi.
Then came the men’s category, where Eben-Spiff also fended off a stiff contest from Tunji Adebayo to return as the 2024 champion. He had eight strokes over Adebayo, while Olatunde Olakunle placed third. Oluwabukunmi Oke won Men’s net price with 137, seven under par in 36 holes.
The Veteran’s honour also returned to Yemi Ajibola, who shoved Kola Oritola to second place to complete a third straight win of the title.Elated by the performances on and off the course, Golf Manager at Lakowe Lakes Golf and Country Estate, Femi Olagbenro, said that there has been a spike in golf enrollment lately, boasting that his club has been matching the traffic by delivering a great golf experience.
Speaking at the closing ceremony of the event, where a record entry was received amid surging interest in the game, Olagbenro said: “We have had more new golfers enroll in the game this year, and it is a trend across major facilities, but here, our default commitment to raising the standard of the golf experience has stood us out.”
Olagbenro also alluded to the growth in the entry at the 2024 Club Championship and corporate backing to the growth and traction across demographies that the game is experiencing.
Some of the sponsors included Gree AC, Africa Diving Services, Total Energies Nigeria, OPAS Nigeria, Acutech Solution, Sparkle MFB, Meristem Securities, Oilflow Global Energy, Geregu Power, MTN Nigeria, and Flourmill Nigeria PLC.
“The fairways, the greens, and the Golf Academy have consistently been improved upon in our pursuit of better golfing experience for our members” he added.
Olagbenro said the outcome of the Club Championship speaks to the commitment of the individual players to their game. “It’s a healthy contest and we are proud that it will stir more players to pursue bettering their game in the coming year.”
