Nigeria’s women cricket national team are among sides competing in the yearly Kwibuka T20 tournament, which commemorates victims of the 1994 Rwandan genocide.
The squad, which was officially unveiled on May 31, 2025, has already played two games under the bright East African sun at the event , which runs from June 3 to 14, in Kigali. Apart from Nigeria, the other countries at the event are Rwanda, Uganda, Tanzania, Zimbabwe, Brazil, Malawi, Sierra Leone, and Cameroon.
In the absence of key players like Piety Lucky, Peculiar Agboya, and Victory Igbenedion due to academic commitments, the Female Yellow Greens lost their opening match against Zimbabwe by six runs.
Coach Leke Oyede is impressed with his side’s performance so far, saying, “Our girls are showing strong character. This tournament is not only about cricket; it’s about growth—personally, professionally, and as representatives of Nigeria.”
The Kwibuka Tournament, now in its 11th year, has become a symbol of hope where sport heals wounds and builds bridges. For the Nigerian women’s team, it’s a chance to inspire the next generation, carry the national flag with pride, and forge their place in history.
