Remo Stars extend lead in NPFL as Rivers falter in Jos
Remo Stars, who have for the past three seasons been among the top contenders for the Nigerian Premier Football League (NPFL) title albeit without success, yesterday showed that they are determined to win the crown this term with a hard-fought 2-1 defeat of Akwa United at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium, Uyo.
Remo Stars and Rivers United have been exchanging leadership of the league since the competition kicked off last year, but the Ikenne, Ogun State-based stars, yesterday, opened a five-point lead over Rivers United, who lost their game with Plateau United by 2-1 in Jos.
At the Godswill Akpabio Stadium, Uche Sebastine gave Akwa United false hope with the opening goal in the sixth minute, which they held onto for the first half.
Remo Stars raised their game on resumption and were rewarded with the equaliser in the 74th minute through Arinze Samuel Anakwe. Dayo Olamilekan gave the Bet9ja boys the lead, which turned out to be the winning goal, nine minutes later.
At the New Jos Township Stadium, two goals from the boots of Olawale Doyeni were all Plateau United needed to dent Rivers United’s title ambitions, with Udo Effiong getting the Finidi George-led team’s consolation goal.
In other matches, Abia Warriors defeated Bayelsa United 1-0 in Umuahia, Heartland beat Lobi Stars 1-0, just as Nasarawa United also defeated Katsina United by a lone goal. The upset of the week happened in Enugu, where Niger Tornadoes defeated defending champions, Rangers International by 2-1.
The league continues today with Kwara United hosting Enyimba at the Ilorin Township Stadium.
