Temitope Folorunso: Pioneering agricultural sustainability through effective pest management

Temitope Folorunso is making a significant impact in agricultural sustainability through her innovative research on pest management. A master’s degree holder in Zoology with a concentration in molecular genetics from Obafemi Awolowo University, Nigeria, Folorunso has demonstrated a commitment to excellence and expertise, graduating with distinction.

One of the highlights of her academic journey is her groundbreaking research on the “Identification of Genes that Confer Resistance to Pesticides in Zonocerus variegatus,” an insect pest causing major destruction in farmlands.

Her research has made significant contributions to agricultural sustainability by addressing food security, environmental health, and the state economy. “I am passionate about contributing to pest management using genetic techniques that will shape the agricultural sector of the country,” Folorunso said. “Being a daughter of a farmer, I understand the effort required to manage these pests.”

In her research, she discovered the lethal dosage of pesticides on Zonocerus variegatus and identified a resistance gene in the pest that detoxifies pesticides. Her molecular genetic skills have been instrumental in making this research possible. This gene-target management approach reduces the adverse effects of pesticides on non-target organisms. As a pioneer of this research in Nigeria, her work has been presented at various conferences, offering hope to the nation and its farmers.

Folorunso’s career journey began early with a teaching assistant position at Adeyemi College of Education, one of Nigeria’s leading colleges. She has since advanced to a senior officer role, continuing to make significant contributions to the institution’s teaching and research efforts. As an advisor and leader, she inspires many of her students.

Looking ahead, Folorunso is committed to continuing her research in ways that will benefit the agricultural industry, aiming to ensure food abundance, a major strength for any country. Her dedication to agricultural sustainability and food security underscores her role as a leader in the field.
