Sometimes in our lives, we experience some not so palatable situations. This is not so unusual. It happens to children of God and that is why the sweet Psalmist said, “Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil”. Though something happens in your life that is so difficult, it looks so dark, it looks so painful, it looks so challenging, it may bring excruciating pains, it may bring tears, it may be so hard and people begin to wonder, are you not supposed to be a friend of God and why are you going through all these? Friends of God are not set away from some of the experiences on everyday life on this side of Heaven and so, whenever it happens, the Bible says, though I walk through the valley of shadow of death, I will fear no evil.
Child of God, you will fear no evil because you are born of God. There is a lot of evil going on in the world, and maybe someone has dreamt a dream and he is telling you that in the dream you died and maybe that in the dream people were carrying rifles and matchetes running after to kill you, the Scripture says, “Greater is He that is in you than he that is in the world (1 John 4:4). The Word of God says, “For whatsoever is born of God overcometh the world: and this is the victory that overcometh the world, even our faith” (1 John 5:4).
Jesus is greater than any other name you will ever know and so if you are passing through difficulties today; if people are threatening you today; if people say they are going to cut off your head today; if people say they are going to put an end to your life today and they want to bring fear into your life, the Apostle Paul said to his son, Timothy, that the spirit that God Has given to us is not of fear but of power, of love and of sound mind (2 Timothy 1:7). It is the spirit of power, it is the spirit of love and it is the spirit of sound mind that are operational in our lives. So, we do not live in fear.
The Psalmist says though you walk through the valley of the shadow of death, you will fear no evil. Why? For the Lord, Almighty is with you. The Lord is with you in that situation. Go through the whole scriptures and listen to the testimonies of the people of God. No matter how dark it appears, no matter how threatening the situation is, no matter how overwhelmingly negative and fearful it may be and no matter how destructive it may want to make you be, God is there with you. The omnipotent God is there with you and the omniscient, Who knew it even from the beginning is there with you.
“For thou art with me”, says the psalmist.
There is a Beautiful hymn we used to sing years ago that says, “In the shadow of His wings, there is peace, sweet peace, peace that passeth understanding.” There is peace, joy in Jesus and you can stay under the shadow of the Almighty. The Lord is always there with you. He is Jehovah Shammah, which means, “The Lord is there”.
