Three persons killed in fresh Plateau attack

Peter Obi celebrates birthday with IDPs, donates N5m, 100 bags of rice

At least three persons were killed in Wereng community, Riyom Local Council of Plateau State, Tuesday night. The Guardian gathered that the night attackers, suspected to be Fulani militia, stormed Kuru Station, Wereng, Gwon, Gwa-Rim and Rinyan communities, leaving three lifeless bodies on their trail.

The killers were reportedly repelled, initially, by security personnel stationed at Gwarim. Well coordinated, the simultaneous attacks on the communities were short-lived, as the bandits retreated due to intervention of security operatives.

The security personnel, who were being praised for their swift intervention, confirmed the incident to The Guardian, yesterday.
Residents told our reporter that they kept vigil throughout that night to secure their community against repeat attack.

Meanwhile, troops of Operation Safe Haven (OPSH) have arrested over 1,000 cattle and a large number of sheep grazing on farmlands
belonging to the locals of Dumunan village in Bwai district of Mangu Local Council.

This was in an effort to address the security concerns in the council. Media Information Officer (MIO) of OPSH, Capt.
Oya James, said, yesterday, that preliminary investigations revealed that the cattle and sheep came from Bokkos and Barkin Ladi local councils.

General Officer Commanding (GOC) 3 Division and Commander OPSH, Maj-Gen. Abdulsalami Abubakar, had earlier promised to seriously
tackle the crisis from the root by blocking anything that could lead to renewed attacks in Mangu.

TO mark his 62nd birthday, Labour Party (LP) Presidential Candidate, Peter Obi, yesterday, stormed Jos, Plateau State, to commiserate with the state government and Mangu people over the attacks and killings by armed men. He donated N5 million and 100 bags of 50kg rice to the IDPs.

Obi, while addressing Governor Caleb Mutfwang at Government House, said he chose his birthday to visit the Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) in Mangu, to support the people and commiserate with them over the needless killings in some local councils.

“I commend the governor for his relentless efforts to see that these killings stop. For us as Nigerians, this trying period is time to be with our people. Nigerians cannot continue to get killed in their homes unprovoked and we fold our arms. We cannot compensate for a life lost. We can only show support. We must do everything within our means to end these barbaric acts,” Obi stressed.

The former governor of Anambra State added that Plateau was known as the most peaceful state in Nigeria with a beautiful weather and serene environment, but expressed regret that in recent years it was plagued by crises and killings.

He said: “We must go back to the Plateau we used to know; a Plateau where people from all walks of life come to organise events and enjoy its beauty. I call on security agencies to collaborate and bring these perpetrators to justice.”
