Throwback Thursday: A Look Back at Iconic Fashion Styles

Nigerian fashion is as old as time can be, with everything stemming from tradition, cultural norms, innovation, and visual expression.

The early 60’s was dominated by the ‘Agbada craze’ which was the peak of the highest form of nobility in some cultures.

Today’s Throwback Thursday takes a look at some legendary trends that shaped different eras in the Nigerian fashion world.

The 1960s: Independence & Adire Elegance

Following Nigeria’s independence in 1960, fashion reflected a newfound sense of national identity. Many people remembered the flower girl at Independence, such was how beautiful it looked when matched in quality colour

Another Adire cloth, a beautifully hand-dyed indigo fabric, became a popular symbol of cultural pride.

Women embraced Adire in flowing dresses, wraps, and skirts, often paired with statement headwraps (gele). Men opted for tailored suits in neutral tones with crisp white shirts.

The 1970 And “Disco Agbada”

The 1980s: The Agbada Craze & Bold Accessories

Agbada became a fashion phenomenon in the 80s. Exaggerated sleeves, intricate embroidery, and luxurious fabrics like damask made it a symbol of power and status.

Accessorize with Flair: Both men and women embraced bold accessories. Chunky gold jewellery, statement sunglasses, and elaborate headpieces added a touch of drama to outfits.

The 1990s: Senators & Ankara Explosion

Senator wears and Ankara fabric took centre stage, especially after the rise of Nollywood. The Nigerian film industry brought a new focus on glamorous dressing. These styles come with it, elaborate gele styles and statement earrings became popular.

Ankara fabric, of all shades and diverse patterns, exploded onto the fashion scene. Women wore it on occasions and it became an official dress on Fridays in many government and non-government organisations.

These are just a few highlights of classic Naija fashion. Each era offered a unique blend of tradition, innovation, and cultural expression.
