Having a thousand AIG’s is skin deep, we need a Regional Police Force, and at least 100,000 more men on the beat. The Police ought to daily account for bullets via a regional Police Service Commission. They ought not to prosecute their own cases. When is the State going to use Water, tear gas etc to quell riots instead of Guns?

I hope the new IG will instill a sense of pride in their uniform in the new policemen and women being recruited. It is far to late for the old hands. The police institution in theory should be a highly respected one, as our lives, safety and security depend on it. They are understaffed, undertrained, underequiped and underpaid and need to have the right incentives to do their job. I recently saw a policewoman security escort carrying the handbag of an ex-governors wife at a social event. Shameful. Is this what we pay our police for? I do not blame the policewoman. She had not been trained in what her role is in a security detail, and obviously her protectee had not been given the parameters of the role of a security detail. This is a disrespect to the uniform. We need to respect the role of police in a society, and maybe that will help them to respect themselves a bit more and do the hard job of protecting us a little bit better. Training and development are so important in helping develop a sense of pride and belong in any organisation. I do hope the IG will help develop this towards making a stronger police force.
