Court fines DPO N10m for lawyer’s unlawful detention
Justice George Omereji of Rivers State High Court, Port Harcourt has ordered the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) of Eneka Police Division, CSP Yahaya Bello-Sam, to pay N10 million to a senior lawyer, Mr. Afolabi Olabisi, for violation of his fundamental rights.
The trial judge held that the police officer failed to prove that the lawyer committed any crime before being detained, adding that the DPO’s action was oppressive.
He ruled that the officer’s action was in flagrant violation of the law.
Justice Omereji condemned Olabisi’s unlawfully detention in same cell with suspected criminals.
