President Muhammadu Buhari on Thursday said the need to restructure the Federal Government ministries and to effect his party’s mantra of change in government processes and operations accounted for why he did not send names of ministerial nominees to the senate until Wednesday, September 30.

The president, who said he was aware of anxiety and impatience exercised by Nigerians, said those feelings were unfounded and that he intended to do things ‘methodically and properly’.

“Fellow Nigerians, there have been a lot of anxiety and impatience over the apparent delay in announcement of ministers. There is no cause to be anxious.

“Our government set out to do things methodically and properly. We received the handing over notes from the outgoing government only four days before taking over.

“Consequently, the Joda Transition Committee submitted its report on the re-organisation of Federal Government structure after studying the hand over notes.

“It would have been haphazard to announce ministers when the government had not finalised the number of ministries to optimally carry the burden of governance.

While confirming the submission of the list of ministerial nominees to the Senate, the President acknowledged that more names would be sent to the National Assembly for confirmation for ministerial appointment.

“The first set of names for ministerial nominees for confirmation has been sent to the senate. Subsequent lists will be forwarded in due course. Impatience is not a virtue.

Buhari assured that his government was prepared to meticulously execute projects that would impact on the lives of Nigerians and asked Nigerians to be patient with his government.

“Order is more vital than speed. Careful and deliberate decisions after consultations get far better results. And better results for our country is what the APC government for CHANGE is all about, ” he said.

    He is just showing us three things:

    1. How incompetent he is;

    2. That he has no respect for Nigerians or the rule of law;

    3. That he has little self-respect.

    But how can we blame him? There is an army of sycophants and blind supporters who applaud his every blunder.

        Really? Pls educate me. First let me explain why I said what I just said:

        1. Inability to present a list after 11 years of running for office and 4 months in power is not a sign of being careful. It is a sign of not being ready. All this talk of not being rushed is a poor attempt to cover up.

        2. He PROMISED to have his cabinet in place by 30 September. Now he is not even able to provide a full list on that date. We are told that he sent a partial list AFTER close of business yesterday. We cannot even be sure because the so-called list remains secret. Yesterday, we heard that the other names will be sent on Tuesday. Today he is telling us that they will be sent “in due course” – only God knows what that means. He does not even have the decency to give a reason or to apologise. I can only imagine the agony of his supporters. He does not even respect them and say, “I’m sorry I couldn’t keep my promise, just gimme a little more time.” Instead he is pontificating and insulting Nigerians by calling us “unruly”. He also seems to be unaware that the constitution requires him to form a proper government and does not envisage the Sole Administratorship that he seems bent on.

        3. If a man has self-respect, he will keep his own promises. If, and when he fails, he will explain and apologise so that people don’t take him as irresponsible. This is why I say this guy does not respect himself.

        Pls enlighten me on how I am ignorant. Thanks.

          So you make list for ministers when you are not in power? Did you get the reason for the delay? If not I will help you ( bc the govt want to merge ministries to reduce cost and that requires proper planning) I hope you know ministers are to serve in the ministries. Maybe you should have prefer engaging the ministers and keep them in waiting while their salaries continue to run I don’t know if you prefer that.

            Get my point: someone who is interested in getting power shd surely have a plan for how to use power well. That is why parties are supposed to present “manifestoes” when campaigning. Unfortunately in most parts of Africa, we do not pay attention to those things, we are mostly interested in issues of ethnicity, religion, etc. And yes, any grown adult who wants to lead, must have an idea of those he will appoint even b4 contesting. They cannot wait till they have become governor or so b4 beginning to think of a plan or a team.

            You asked my problem with “due course”. It means “indefinitely”. But we have problems that cannot wait indefinitely because people are dying and things are getting worse – these problems need immediate attention. Read the news – even the CBN has been complaining that the lack of an economic team is hurting the economy badly. Read Reuters report today on Buhari’s speech. What about people being killed by BH? So u see, we cannot afford to wait for “in due course”.

            And then u talk of the constitution. Yes! the leaders swear to uphold the constitution. If they don’t like it, they move for amendment. Democracy means the rule of the constitution but it seems there are many Nigerians who would rather be ruled by a ‘strongman’. It is a pity. The rule of law guarantees freedom, dignity and long term progress. The rule of strongmen always lead to dictatorship and backwardness. This is not about Buhari or APC but about the principles we need to learn if we want Nigeria to be great.

            Have a nice evening and happy independence.

      AA please put aside sentiment deep down in your heart do you really think PMB is incompetent? If yes what do you think of GEJ? Pls put sentiment aside.

      • Author’s gravatar

        To sincerely put sentiment aside, I don’t THINK Buhari is incompetent, he is the one DISPLAYING it himself. YOU are the one who needs to put sentiment aside, my friend. The guy PROMISED that he will have a cabinet in place by Sept. 30, now he does not even have a list and it is Oct. 2. I wonder for una o! Keep clapping for him sha. The CBN has said our economy is likely going into recession next year. I know u will blame Jonathan then. Just remember that PMB’s children are abroad. Enjoy.

    @AcademicsAnonymous:disqus In my opinion, you are been unfair in your comment. You are saying been unable to appoint ministers in 3 months is a sign of lack of readiness. If I may ask you, of what use is appointing ministers on ministries you are not sure will remain?. The fact that the current regime took their time to study what they met on ground in conjunction with the handing over notes is highly commendable and a sign that this is not going to be business as usual, and fits the adage that ‘you cannot put new wine in an old bottle’.it is a demonstration that the change chant is not a mantra but a reality. One of the problems we had in the past is lack of direction and focus, in which purpose and mandate were not clear resulting in revolving cycles of failures with past regimes. A lot of PMB’s critics are caught napping that they have not succeeded in stampeding him to walking into the mines that were laid for him to derail the new government. The respect we want is good governance not rhetoric. Please pray that the good Lord will have mercy on Nigeria and continue to guide and protect this government.

      I do not agree with ur analysis which is a mere repetition of PMB any way. But let’s leave that for now. I want u to respond to the 2 other points I have raised. (1) If someone fails to keep a promise, is it not decent to apologise? (2)So, when is “in due course” when the other names will be sent to the NASS? Nigerians must wait indefinitely? (3) Is it fair on Nigerians for their president to insult them in an Independence Day speech?

      I just want to appeal to Nigerians to be very careful how we respond to this government, otherwise we will have ourselves to blame at the end. The ruling class have nothing to lose. Many of PMB’s kids were trained abroad and are still abroad 2day living in luxury and security. If we celebrate incompetence because of partisanship, ethnic or regional bigotry, it is us the ordinary people that will suffer. The ruling people will never suffer. So, goodluck to us. But pls try to respond to the other points I have mentioned above.

        What exactly is your problem with due course? Do you know the reason for pushing others for due course? For not naming all the nominees now become serious offence that requires apology. Why don’t you criticize on what will benefit the people instead of looking for trivial issue.Do you know the number of ministries we are going to have now? If not for the constitution do we really need 36 ministers?
        All you wanted to say was to whip sentiment which you captured in your last paragraph and to me is really unfortunate.

      Nigerian ministries need change in processes and reintroduction of standards existing since the 60s. I agree with Buhari about laying the foundation for doing it before injecting ministers. Buhari is the most prepared Nigerian for the presidency after having run for office four times in the past. The delay is also restart to set performance standards for ministers.

    We trust Buhari but There are some names that if they appear in His ministerial list next week that means nothing change and he has been arm twisted then we rest our hope on God almighty to rescue Nigeria.
