There is no room for gay rights in Nigeria, says Buhari
President Muhammadu Buhari, currently in the United States of America on a 4-day official visit, has categorically ruled out any chance of Nigerian being pressured by the America into legalising homosexuality in the country.
According to the Special Adviser to the President of Media and Publicity, Femi Adesina, the issue of gay rights came up during a discussion the president had on Tuesday.
Adesina, in a Twitter post, revealed that President Buhari outrightly rejected the idea citing legal and cultural reasons.
The issue of gay marriage came up here yesterday. PMB was point blank. Sodomy is against the law in Nigeria, and abhorrent to our culture.

Before he travelled to the Us on Sunday, Nigerians were apprehensive that President Buhari may be pressured into legalising homosexuality in Nigeria by the American president, Barack Obama. Their fears were heightened by the recent country-wide legalisation of homosexuality in America which Obama actively supported.
Homosexuality was outlawed by the regime of Goodluck Jonathan in Nigeria.
The Nigerian anti-gay law became effective on January 13, 2014. The law, which contains penalties of up to 14 years in prison and bans gay marriage, same-sex “amorous relationships” and membership of gay rights groups, was passed by the national assembly int May of 2013.

The United States recognises the sovereignty of Nigeria and whilst the US may endeavour to seek better treatment for gays and lesbians all over the world through the law. The impetus for change must come from within a state. I want o reaffirm gay marriage was never on the agenda for negotiations between President Buhari and the President Mr Obama. I am pleased to see that in the last two years this has happened, with support for gay rights doubling to 13%. It is changing however, and one day the majority of Nigerians will be in favour of gay equality. Maybe soon it will a decriminalised offence. You know you all have been played by a master politician Mr Buhari. He has managed to galvanise Christian and Muslim support to which both faiths are stridently opposed to homosexuality to distract from the real and pressing issues of Nigeria, which are economic malaise, entrenched and systemic corruption as well as the threat of Boko Haram. The government is failing on all points abysmally. It has proved ineffectual at protecting its citizens within its borders. I am quite impressed by your understanding of our challenges. I would also like to enlighten you about our values; Nigerians and Africans are essentially communal people, leaving together with the family as the basic social unit. We are also inherently religious irrespective of the object of faith; keep as faithfully as possible to the doctrines of our beliefs. In the typical African setting, the communal rights override the individual right, that may be putting it crudely but I believe other civilizations have their equivalents of this principle. We are richly cultured and respect the cultures of others when we have to live with them and even accommodate other cultures as can be evidently observed in our various diluted cosmopolitan cities.
An African would not discuss colors for example with a blind not only out of the apparent futility but out of respect, neither would he check out his fingers or limbs before an amputee for the same reason. My take is the US insulted our idiosyncrasies by bringing up the issue with our President in the first instance. This issue came up with GEJ and Nigerians spoke on it. As has been said, here is something that has inherent and obvious health and social hazards apart from being odious and anti natural in form and practice.
Coming to our problems, we have never understood the magnitude of our problems better than now, and like you know a problem identified and shared is half solved.
