Over N900m has been spent to boost water supply and sanitation system in Kebbi State.

The General Manager of the State Water Board, Engr. Zaiyanu Shehu, who disclosed this to newsmen yesterday, in Birnin Kebbi, said the project, executed by the Federal and state governments, was in collaboration with the World Bank with the aim of providing potable water to the people.

Shehu, who outlined activities of his Board, said the government had already committed to the water supply across the three senatorial zones.

He explained that the acute shortage of water supply experienced in recent times, especially in the Birnin Kebbi metropolis was due to the rehabilitation works currently undertaken in the two waterworks, which have reached completion stages.

According to him, the Federal Government under its National third Urban Sector Reform Project and World Bank are the two financiers of the project, while the state government bears a counter-part funding.

Shehu further said that the initial project would cover seven of the board outlets across the state, adding that the work on the Dukku and the old (whole) water works has so far reached 96 per cent completion, noting that very soon water will be released to serve the purpose.

He enjoined the residents to bear the little delay and the inconveniences experienced as a result of the seizure: “I want to assure residents that within a couple of days, water supply would be restored as all the overhauling and replacement of machinery have been completed.”
