First Vice-President of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), Seyi Akinwunmi, has revealed that the first ever Nigeria youth football development policy has been documented.
Speaking in Ibadan at the weekend, Akinwunmi said the essence of the documentation was to develop the nation’s football from the grassroots, as well as set a direction for youth football.
The NFF Vice-President said lack of football development from the grassroots had hindered the growth of the game in recent times.
“For us in the NFF, we are working very hard on the development of grassroots football. Just yesterday, we had the finals of the Principal’s Cup.
“Last week, we had that of Master’s Cup and before was the King’s Cup,” he said.
Akinwunmi said the New FIFA President, Gianni Infantino, was amazed by the level of Nigeria’s grassroots football, adding that he had promised to grace the National finals of our under 13 and 15 competitions.
“Today, we have at least six players of the Golden Eaglets in the Flying Eagles. We are not doing enough but trying hard to set the standard,” he said.
He dismissed the insinuation that the NFF Technical Committee was not in existence, saying that the committee work extremely hard to meet its mandate.
“The problem we have with some of our elders is that they feel neglected when things are taken far from them… they always want to be considered in decision making but time has changed.
