FORMER President of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), Olisa Agbakoba, has called for more balanced voting pattern in the forthcoming gubernatorial election scheduled for April 11, 2015.
Agbakoba made the call yesterday while addressing reporters in Lagos, saying that ‘Nigerians should vote with their heads for the party of their choices.’
According to him: “We hope that April 11, 2015 elections that will take place to produce gubernatorial process would be balanced. I want to see balance voting every where from Lagos, Enugu to Kaduna, I want to see robust counting, l don’t want to see party A scoring 90 per cent, while party B gets zero. That is not voting and that the biggest draw back.”
He added: “You see, the problem with PDP was that it got too much confidence because it was getting all the votes. So we don’t want the APC to become the PDP and get all the votes. People should vote with their heads for the party they want. ”
Agbakoba however, commended President Goodluck Jonathan’s conduct and manner that he accepted defeat and called him a hero.
On why he called Jonathan a hero, he said: “Why I feel President Jonathan is the hero is because a dictator does not give space to his opponent. A dictator crushes the opposition, but another fact is that APC, which is the fourth hero for me was allowed to grow, it may be easy to say Jonathan has no choice, he had choices. Mugabe has shown that he can absolutely cripple the opposition. So, that is a very strong commendation for Jonathan. He has allowed the democratic space to open. He allowed multi-party democracy. He allowed free elections. You see, some Nigerians president will not allow it.
“We’ve seen how the NPN frustrated Chief Obafemi Awolowo from becoming president, there are example. We ‘ve seen how the then military President Ibrahim Babangida allowed the process to produce Chief M K.O Abiola. Political power in the hands of a mad man is a time bomb. So, give President Jonathan credit for being cool, calm and accepting defeat.
He further stressed fact that there was a strong, credible, intelligent opposition, adding that Governor Babatunde Fashola, Dele Alake, Wale Edu were the thinkers of the party, that is why APC defeated the PDP, these were the people that made the difference.
He added: “To me, PDP seem to have concentrated more on hate campaign which of course, the APC also did and we condemned it, but what I saw was an APC as an absolutely brilliant football team if I should use the analysis of football team.
“There is a brilliant football team with people around, the PDP was a weak football team with a weak manager. The results are very clear. So those are the heroes, but there were also villains in the last election.”
“That is what we need to get out of our politics, the biggest villains goes to the South-East. It is incredible for Jonathan to have won the type of numbers he won in the South East. It doesn’t do leaders of the South East any good, neither does it do leaders of the North East any good that Gen. Muhammadu Buhari scored the type of numbers there.”
He also charged Buhari to critically deal with the issue of ethnicity that is causing the country a major setback.
