THE coast is now clear for the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Aminu Tambuwal to contest next Saturday’s governorship election in Sokoto Stae on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC).
This followed the adjournment on Thursday of a suit seeking to stop him filed by Senator Umaru Dahiru who contested the state APC governorship primary with the Speaker.
The suit before Justice Evoh Chukwu of the Federal High Court, Abuja has now been adjourned till April 13, two days after the governorship polls must have taken place.
Umaru Dahiru is a serving senator and current chairman of Senate Committee on the Judiciary. Dahiru who polled 23 votes as against Tambuwal’s 3,462 votes in the December 4, 2014 governorship primary, had approached the court, alleging that the primary which produced Tambuwal was fraught with irregularities.
Before the Thursday’s adjournment, there was tension and fear across the state, especially within the APC that Dahiru may make good his vow to stop Tambuwal.
A stalwart of the party in the state in a telephone interview with The Guardian said: “The fear that the judiciary could be used to stop the Speaker from contesting in the election is premised on the fact that the senator has been the Chairman of the Senate Committee on Judiciary for over eigth years, which gives him the exclusive privilege of knowing and working with those that matter in the sector.
“In this state everything is possible. We are however glad about what we heard that the Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Mahmud Mohammed has already read the riot act to all judges, especially those handling election matters, to be above board and we are aware that a particular reference was made to the APC governorship matter.”
The party chieftain said observers of the tussle between the two National Assembly members are wondering why the duo who are from the same Tambuwal town in Sokoto West senatorial zone, could not resolve their differences amicably.
