Human rights activist, Joe Okei-Odumakin urges Lagos State government to carry-out awareness before implementation of laws against street trading

hawkers-lagos-(1)Human rights activist and President, Women Arise for Change Initiative, Dr. Joe Okei-Odumakin, has called on the Lagos State government to carry out a massive awareness campaign before the implementation of the State’ Street Trading and Illegal Market Prohibition Law 2003, which restricts street trading and hawking in the metropolis.

Adding that with the present state of the economy, the government needs to show understanding in the implementation of such law.

Speaking during a visit to Babs Fafunwa Millennium Senior Grammar School, Ojodu in Lagos, the woman activist also commended the state of infrastructural development in public School in the state compared to what was obtained in the past, urging the government to keep the tempo.

In her short speech at the assembly hall with the students, Dr. Odumakin, who also dressed in the same school uniform with the students as part of activities to mark her 50th birthday, advised the students to be courageous and work hard with determination to succeed.

“The purpose of my visit is part of my efforts to bring out the best in public School. To inspire them to be confidence and courageous, because you are leaders of tommorow.

“I am also a product of public school and we need to be encouraged to give back to the society we belong”, she stated.
Odumakin who came to the school in company of popular actress, Chioma and others also distributed exercise books (bearing some of her pictures with world leaders) and biros to the students.

She rhetorically asked the students some questions with a reverberating response of ‘yes we can’ from the students.
Some of the questions include: can we pass our exams without cheating?, is it possible to fight terrorism by complementing the efforts of the law enforcement agents?.

She went further to described these as some social vices plaguing our society and admonished the students to refrain from them and work harder to achieve success in their career. Saying, success can only be achieved through determination.

Present at the School to welcome Odumakin are: Director of Co-curricular (Science & Technology) Education District six, Alhaja Mrs. Ramata Oguntola; 2nd Vice President, All Nigerian Confederation of Principal of Secondary Schools (ANCOPSS), Mrs Oyefunke Adepoju and the host Principal of the School, Mrs Adebola Kolawole among other teachers and non-teaching staff of the school.

They commend Odumakin innovative visit and also assured her that the women and the district are behind her in all her activisms in the country.
