Emir Bayero emphasised the significance of education, appealing to parents not to hesitate to enrol their wards in school early and allow them to complete at least basic education at the age of 16.
The emir made the appeal when he received on courtesy call in his palace, The United Nations International Children’s Emergency Fund (UNICEF) Kano team, led by Chief of Field Officer, Mr. Maulid Warfa.
Emir Bayero worried that parents have abandoned hundreds of children on the streets to fend for themselves, maintained that those who neglected their primary responsibilities would answer questions before the Almighty.
While commending the government in ensuring support and provision of vaccines to end the COVID-19 pandemic, the first class traditional ruler encouraged Kano residents to endeavour to receive vaccines. He drew the attention of residence to the onset of harmattan season and associate influenza, catarrh and other forms of diseases, calling for urgent vaccination to remain immune to health challenges.
The traditional ruler used the opportunity to also appeal to all families to ensure pregnant women register for ante-natal care and ensure exclusive breastfeeding for the first six months of childbirth.
According to him, “Of late there have been reports about a variant of the poliovirus in the environment. I want to encourage all parents and caregivers to take immunisation seriously.
“Efforts of government in bringing cholera in Kano under control is commended, but people need to adopt a preventive approach instead of just responding. We need to avoid open defecation and adopt proper hygiene.”
Earlier, the UNICEF field officer, Mr Maulid Warfa, lauded the courage of the emir and pledged the body’s preparedness to provide technical and financial support to realise the set goals.
