Ogun Poly students protest abduction of colleagues

Vehicular and human movement was grounded yesterday, along the Lagos-Abeokuta expressway, as students of D.S. Adegbenro ICT Polytechnic, Itori, Ogun State, blocked the ever-busy road, to protest the abduction of two of their colleagues by unknown gunmen.

For the period the protest lasted, many travellers and motorists who plied the road were stranded as the angry students barricaded the entire road.

The Guardian learnt that the students were reportedly abducted around 1:00a.m. at their hostel in Afowowa, a neighbouring community in Ewekoro council of the state.

It was gathered that aside the students that were kidnapped, the kidnappers made away with laptops and other valuables of some of the occupants.

One of the students, who spoke with The Guardian on phone, said they informed the police during the raid, which lasted for over four hours, but the only response received, was that their operational vehicle was not in good condition.

She said it was the nonchalant attitude of the police that forced her colleagues to barricade the road, to register their grievances.

“We were annoyed because of the refusal of the police to respond to our distress calls.

“When they finally arrived, they ordered our colleagues to lead the onslaught against the gunmen. Unfortunately, one of us was shot in the leg and others were badly injured. That is why we took to the street to protest,” the student said.

Unconfirmed report has it that when the students marched to the police station, some police vans were stoned at the beginning of the protest.

When contacted, the State Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Abimbola Oyeyemi, who said he was yet to be briefed of the cause of the protest, promised to get to the root of the matter soonest.
