The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has officially thrown the contest for its presidential ticket open despite conceding that its constitution supports zoning.

“After a very extensive deliberation NEC aligned with the recommendation of the PDP National Zoning Committee that the Presidential Election should now be left open,” PDP spokesman Debo Ologunagba said. “The Party should also work towards consensus candidate where possible.”

At its 96th National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting in Abuja on Wednesday night, the party named former President of the Senate, David Mark, as chairman of the planning committee of the May 28-29 national convention where the presidential flagbearer would be nominated.

Delta state governor, Ifeanyi Okowa will serve as the deputy chairman of the committee.

The meeting also resolved that the presidential primary election will hold in Abuja.
